Made in Washington State from high-quality steel, this tool makes removing check valves from Coleman lanterns and stoves much easier.

Two threaded rods are included. One fits the thicker stems found on most older Coleman check valves, while the other fits the slimmer stems used on many newer replacements.

This tool has also been reported to work with some AGM check valves, although fitment can vary.

How to Use the Check Valve Removal Tool

Follow these steps carefully when removing a check valve:

  1. Choose the correct rod. Remove the air stem from the check valve and match its threads to one of the tool’s two rods: Large or Small. Most Coleman equipment made before the 1980s uses the Large rod, while newer check valves often use the Small rod.
  2. Thread the rod into the check valve. Screw the matching rod into the check valve by hand. It should bottom out or engage as many threads as possible. A drop of light oil may help if it is difficult to thread.

    Important: If the rod only turns once or twice and does not properly catch the threads, stop. Do not force it. There is not enough thread engagement, and continuing could damage the check valve or the tool.

  3. Install the outer tube. Slide the outer tube down over the threaded rod.
  4. Seat the prongs. Gently rotate the outer tube until its prongs are fully seated in the check valve’s slots. The fit may be tight on some early check valves and a little looser on later ones. This is normal because Coleman check valves varied somewhat over the years.
  5. Secure the tool. Thread the wing nut onto the exposed end of the rod and tighten it snugly by hand. This holds the tube and prongs in place.

    Do not overtighten the wing nut. Doing so could damage the check valve threads.

  6. Remove the check valve. Place a long adjustable wrench on the flats of the tool. Hold the fount securely—a second person can be helpful—and turn the wrench quickly counterclockwise to break the check valve loose.

    If the valve is especially stubborn, give the end of the wrench handle a sharp tap with your hand or a rubber mallet. A controlled shock is often more effective than applying increasing steady pressure. Once the valve breaks loose, finish unscrewing it by hand.

Reinstalling the Check Valve

Reverse the steps above to reinstall the check valve.

  • Tighten the check valve only until snug. Overtightening can damage its threads.
  • Thread sealant is not required.
  • A light coating of oil on the threads may make future removal easier.
